Preserve Portlethen Moss Day

Over recent years, the Ranger Service, Portlethen Moss Conservation Group, and dedicated volunteers—including local businesses, students, and pupils—have worked collaboratively to protect Portlethen Moss by reducing water loss from the bog.
This volunteer day offers a valuable opportunity to take part in installing a plastic piling dam, designed to retain water, slow its flow, and encourage it to spread across the bog—helping to restore and raise the water table.
Please bring or wear wellington boots and meet at the Bruntland Road entrance to Portlethen Moss.
• Portlethen Moss is a raised bog, a rain-fed wetland formed by sphagnum moss and other plants uniquely adapted to nutrient-poor conditions.
• Over time, sphagnum moss only partially decomposes in low-oxygen water, gradually building up into a dome and forming peat over thousands of years.
• Peat is a vital carbon store, but when it dries out, it releases carbon into the atmosphere—making conservation efforts essential.
